“Apple Service Level Agreement”
An organization once defined what we do by describing the services we provided, what was allowed within our environment. It was clearly defined where our services stopped when it related to engineering (test) labs and where we would provide ‘consulting’ services when asked because we were the experts in ‘the technology/service/product and we already had teams who lived and breathed this. It didn’t matter, anyways. There were regular meetings, not quarterly like stock holder meetings, but anything from weekly to monthly, and there were minutes of the meetings and each department was encouraged to pass this information throughout their department…we did work for the same organization, didn’t we? We were not in competition with each department (well, there were friendly competitions to build a fun environment and help to eliminate personality barriers! That was internal to our org…after upper level management changes, we were whipped into shape and the we were soon (okay, after 18 months) showed signs of respect from external departments, namely, the engineers. The head cheese tasked management to have regular meetings with the various engineering groups (there were plenty!). They were our largest customers, so to speak! How do you stay in business? Provide services what the customer wants and needs!!! I didn’t have to to write that…that’s business 101 that we, ahem, all took. Okay, I don’t remember taking it, but I had hands-on with many Mom and Pop’s, mainly Pop’s businesses as an employee and later as a client. My internal struggle is to either use tactics by renegade engineers I’ve been exposed to, lower productivity and in the process, get my innards eaten up (I’m a quiet A-type, the worst type), or move on where I can can enjoy my work and thereby enhance life for others..ahh, inner-peace. My mission and path in the many lives is the latter.
